Volvo v70 auto gearbox problems. My Volvo V70 is 210000 miles on the clock and the gearbox is starting to act as described here. The local garage not the Volvo dealer thinks it may last another year and then it is terminal. I too have a 2001XC70 with gearbox problems.
Volvo refused to look at it and would only replace it. Symptoms are gearbox going into Neutral while driving as you try and accelerate after haveing taken your foot off the accelerator pedal. Sometimes on deceleration engaging lower gear with audible cluck and jerky gearchange.
Problem was also intermittent. Took it to Gearbox specialist who. Volvo V70 2001 hesitating to change gear problem occurs more frequently during slow commute at aprox.
One day driving through I-285 in atlanta GA car suddenly stopped. Thank god I was at an exit area and was able to slide car to a non traffic area. Car was able to start engine again aprox.

Volvo and their insistence that the gearbox is sealed for life strikes again For some unknown reason possibly to appease leasing companies and reducing servicing costs Volvo do not include an automatic fluid change on this gearbox.
